The Alberta SIP Grant: Why a Multidisciplinary Approach Matters
In today’s complex risk environment, places of worship and cultural institutions in Alberta face increasing safety challenges—from hate-motivated incidents to general physical vulnerabilities. Thankfully, the Alberta Security Infrastructure Program (ASIP) offers financial support to address these concerns through its Category A: Security Risk Assessment stream.
But receiving funding is only part of the equation. To truly build resilient, welcoming, and protected environments, UnityWatch recommends going beyond minimum requirements. That starts with working alongside a multidisciplinary advisory team that understands both the technical and human dimensions of safety.
What Is ASIP Category A?
The ASIP Grant, administered by the Government of Alberta, helps cover costs up to $10,000 for a professional Security Risk Assessment. This is a required first step before most infrastructure improvements (Category B) or emergency funding (Category C).
Organizations may apply through:
· • Cost Recovery Stream (for completed assessments)
· • Regular Grant Stream (to fund an upcoming assessment)
Full program details are available at: https://www.alberta.ca/alberta-security-infrastructure-program-grant.aspx
What Makes a Security Risk Assessment “Qualified”?
To be eligible for funding, assessments must be conducted by certified professionals using approved standards such as:
· • CPP / PSP certifications from ASIS International
· • CPTED-trained professionals (ICCP or CPD)
· • SAFE Design® Standard assessors
· • Risk methodologies based on ISO 31000 or 22341
Assessors must not be in conflict of interest with service vendors.
